The Magic Flute
A visual interpretation of Mozart's opera
Flying Sugar Press, London 2001
Limited edition of four similar but not identical copies. Twenty-seven full page monoprints by Yaron. Each page of the four books is unique since the technique involves painting directly on a plate then offsetting the image onto paper through a hand press, without retaining the original. The paper is BFK Rives 300gsm and the pages are French folded. Full suede leather bindings made by Rob Hadrill at Book Works, London, with stencils by Yaron printed on front and back covers. Cloth-covered slipcase. Size of book: 29.5 x 39cms.Monoprinting is a technique that has been used by many contemporary artists and Yaron's innovative exploration of the process achieves a sensuous variety of textures and tones in sepia and black. A synopsis of the opera is printed at the beginning but the rest of the book is a wordless panorama of surreal scenes which, rather than describing the story, draw you into its haunting atmosphere, as the music does. Sample pages shown below, much reduced, give only a rough idea of the tactile quality of this book.
